About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service skills, ensuring a positive interaction with customers and reporting any issues to the supervisor. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor or Account Manager, potentially including specialized floor and carpet care.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/carry 1 – 30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, trash.
  • Ability to push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
  • Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
  • Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas and retrieving supplies.
  • Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces.
  • Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout shift.
  • Ability to use sight for cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.
  • Must be courteous.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with floor care – stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting of surfaces above shoulder height using a treated high duster.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution.
  • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls.
  • Spot clean windows.
  • Clean bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, using germicidal solutions.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners as needed, and cleaning cans if liquid is present.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using the appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning sidewalks, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
  • Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, spot clean spills, and clean trash cans.
  • Remove accumulated dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays.
  • Police outside eating areas.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, ensuring all areas under furniture and behind doors are cleaned.
  • Visually inspect rooms after cleaning to ensure all steps were completed and furniture is correctly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Stay within the assigned work area unless directed otherwise by a supervisor.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, auto scrubbing, buffing) and carpet care (extraction, bonneting).
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
