The Social Security Administration’s Law and Policy office seeks attorneys to serve as Special Assistant United States Attorneys in U.S. Attorney’s Offices. Attorneys investigate and prosecute criminal fraud cases affecting SSA and other government benefits programs, working closely with SSA’s Office of the Inspector General and other law enforcement agencies. They are assigned to and work in a U.S. Attorney’s Office, under its management supervision, and handle cases through all stages of prosecution, from grand jury proceedings and indictments through motions, plea negotiations, trials, and sentencing. Attorneys manage significant caseloads and receive mentoring, training, and support from Law and Policy and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The role offers meaningful and challenging public-service legal work in a professional, team-oriented, and flexible environment. The announcement is a continuously open, six-month standing register for future vacancies. This is a permanent, full-time position in the Excepted Service; applicants must relocate to the selected city or be willing to commute, and occasional overnight travel is required. Flextime may be available. Relocation expenses will not be paid.
