About The Position

The State of Ohio, Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking a General Activities Therapist 2 (GAT2) to join their team at the Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility. DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10-21, who have been adjudicated and committed by juvenile courts. DYS aims to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities, believing that all youth can reach their greatest potential. This role involves serving in an instructional capacity for youth, planning and implementing recreational activities, and acting as a member of an interdisciplinary team to recommend treatment goals. The position requires preparing reports on youth behavior and progress, creating weekly activity schedules, and maintaining inventory records. The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace and this position may be subject to additional restrictions. All final candidates must undergo a criminal background check, pre-employment drug screening, and complete three weeks of mandatory, paid training at the Correctional Training Academy in Orient, Ohio.

Requirements

  • 30 mos. exp. with coaching, personal training, &/or fitness instruction or 30 mos. exp. providing work direction to incarcerated persons & training &/or development.
  • Or completion of associate degree in recreation; and 12 mos. exp. in activity therapy or recreation.
  • Or completion of undergraduate core program in recreation; and 6 mos. exp. in activity therapy or recreation.
  • Or 6 mos. exp. as General Activities Therapist 1, 44211.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in an instructional capacity for youth; plan and implement recreational activities
  • Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team; recommend group and/or individual treatment goals and activities; prepare and maintain reports for treatment team regarding behavior and progress
  • Prepare weekly activity schedule; prepare and maintain inventory records of equipment and materials
