About The Position

SaskEnergy is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our team. The Gas Controller monitors and controls the transportation, storage and delivery of natural gas through the transmission system on a 24/7 basis in accordance with contractual requirements, consistent with system capabilities, operating characteristics and conditions for the continuity of services, including the safe, reliable and cost effective system operation, by monitoring, interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, communicating, controlling and managing the system flow requirements. The Gas Controller also monitors other facilities of SaskEnergy and its subsidiaries. The Gas Controller is the key link between Gas Control, field staff, customer plant sites and interconnecting pipelines.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Engineering Technology Diploma (Instrumentation, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Petroleum, CAD, Chemical, Environmental) from a recognized institution.
  • Eligible for membership with Technology Professionals Saskatchewan (TPS).
  • Pre-Qualification Skills Assessment.
  • Four (4) years experience involved in the design, operation and maintenance of storage, compression, distribution and transmission facilities.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Provincial or Interprovincial Journeyperson Industrial Instrument Mechanic Certificate; Provincial or Interprovincial Journeyperson Electrician Certificate; or Provincial or Interprovincial Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certificate.
  • Pre-Qualification Skills Assessment.
  • Four (4) years experience directly involved in the operation and maintenance of storage, compression and transmission facilities.
  • Gas Control Certificate of Qualification consisting of on the job training of operation and control of the TransGas system and related formal classroom training modules.
  • Applicable mandatory Occupational Health & Safety training, certifications and other Corporately required training and certification.

Responsibilities

  • Control, monitor, interpret, evaluate and respond to gas system flow requirements taking into consideration the allocation of load forecasts, pressures, available gas supplies, gas transmission and storage capacities, contractual obligations, outages, emergency situations and weather factors, to maintain reliable, cost effective and safe transport and storage services on a 24/7 basis.
  • Coordinate and monitor, planned and unplanned system outages, including configuring system to minimize interruptions to customer service.
  • Operate and control the flow of natural gas on the transport and storage systems by utilizing automated remote control at storage, compression and transmission line facilities.
  • Monitor and control the system to maximize safe and reliable supply and minimize compression fuel gas and compressor electricity costs.
  • Utilize the Gas Control Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to its full capabilities including graphical trending to assist with proactive operation.
  • Monitor the accuracy and reliability of the SCADA system and recommend enhancements to the Gas Control SCADA system, company facilities and operations, for minimizing operating costs and increasing reliability.
  • Monitor the system for deficiencies in performance and capacity, making proper notification of shortfalls identified.
  • Acknowledge, diagnose, filter and provide timely response to all SCADA system alarms following appropriate actions including system changes and following communication protocols for field staff response for safe and reliable service.
  • Initiate investigation into alarm issues, identify priority of investigations, follow-up and escalate when required.
  • Dispatch operation staff to site, on a 24/7 basis related to alarm response or system mode changes.
  • Perform role as the key Gas Control communication link between field operations and Gas Control to ensure the 24/7 delivery of safe and reliable services, while maintaining system integrity and economical operation.
  • Perform role as the key Gas Control communication link between customers' plant sites and interconnecting pipelines and Gas Control on a 24/7 basis.
  • Communicate with operations personnel and field staff on a daily basis.
  • Communicate daily and weekly system operation plans and priorities to field staff; authorize short-term maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain balancing agreements with interconnecting pipelines to ensure in balance and to minimize penalties.
  • Determine and nominate optimum level of interconnecting pipeline transportation to minimize transport costs.
  • Prepare accurate Gas Control logs, documentation, reports and permits on a daily and monthly basis.
  • Evaluate and prepare forecasts for daily operations and weekly operational plans that will accurately represent expected system operations for reliable and cost effective operation.
  • Provide initial emergency response coordination and assume responsibility during emergency situations, taking necessary operational steps to minimize the impact to the system, our customers and the public and if necessary, assist in dispatching appropriate personnel.
  • Provide training and support to new Gas Controllers.
  • Update and maintain internal business and operational systems, including participating in development and testing to ensure systems perform to business and operational specifications and requirements.
