About The Position

Exciting Opportunity: Gardener Do you have a passion for cultivating and maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces? The University of New Mexico Facilities Services Department is seeking a Gardener to join our team! In this hands-on role, you’ll help implement detailed landscape plans and be responsible for planting, fertilizing, applying approved chemicals, watering, weeding, and pruning woody and herbaceous plants across campus. Your work will play a key role in keeping our green spaces healthy, vibrant, and welcoming. If you enjoy working outdoors, gaining practical experience, and contributing to the care of campus grounds, this is a great opportunity for you!

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Southwest Desert Landscaping techniques
  • Experience in plant identification and care
  • Knowledge of pruning and weed control
  • Possession of 3A and 3B pesticide license
  • Ability to lead small groups

Responsibilities

  • Plants, transplants, fertilizes, applies chemicals, waters, prunes, and weeds flower beds and plant areas.
  • Maintains flowers, bushes, trees, and shrubs.
  • Implement detailed landscape plans.
  • Plant and propagate bedding plants; may manage greenhouse operations, as applicable.
  • Assists in the work direction and on-the-job training of other personnel.
  • Picks up and disposes of litter.
  • May assist in various maintenance activities as required.
  • May operate a motor-vehicle to transport materials and equipment, as appropriate to the position.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • May oversee and/or assist with snow removal activities.
  • May irrigate, mow, rake, and trim lawns and/or athletic fields.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
