About The Position

Gardeners are assigned to specific areas (zones) and are responsible for the health and appearance of the landscape within those zones. The primary responsibilities include pruning, maintaining floral and shrub beds, performing preventative maintenance, spraying, and other general landscape maintenance tasks. This position is essential to maintaining the overall aesthetics established at Elon University.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read and understand maintenance journals to perform preventative maintenance and other related tasks.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform mathematical operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Essential reasoning ability while operating equipment to avoid potentially dangerous situations when operating in a University campus environment.
  • Sound judgment must be used to protect students, facility, and staff while operating equipment.
  • Possess a Driver’s license and be insurable by the University carrier.
  • Possess an NC Pesticide License or acquire one within six (6) months of being hired.
  • Ability to delegate and be mindful of the work being completed when assigned help (temporary employees or student workers).
  • Essential communication skills to complete tasks.
  • Required to be available to assist with preparation, throughout, and after inclement weather events and all University emergency events as part of the Elon Emergency Response team.

  • Associate degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Horticulture or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the health and appearance of all floral, shrub, and bed areas within their assigned areas, including chemical applications, weed removal, fertilization, watering, pruning, removal of dead plant material, and litter pickup.
  • Perform a number of tasks according to the time of year and additional responsibilities delegated by the manager, such as landscape renovation, fertility programs, ground repair, pressure washing, and mulching.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of annual and perennial flower beds, as well as plant replacements.
  • Document the plant materials in their assigned zone areas and generate a list of replacement plants annually.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance activities, including support for special events, projects, conferences, and other activities hosted on the campus of Elon University.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and engagement with Elon’s foundational commitment to relationships, mentoring, and collaboration in a close-knit residential community.

  • Attend or participate in campus activities such as College Coffee, Numen Lumen, campus cultural events, athletic events, continuing education, professional development opportunities and trainings, employee resource groups, and other university-sponsored activities.
  • Be available to assist with preparation, throughout, and after inclement weather events and all University emergency events as part of the Elon Emergency Response team.
  • Perform assigned evenings and weekend work from time to time.
