About The Position

This role involves assisting the GAINS Director in overseeing a summer program for school-aged children. The Assistant Program Director is responsible for the daily supervision and safety of participants, as well as supervising youth counselors. This includes planning and leading daily activities, teaching games, and ensuring compliance with city and state agency regulations. The position also involves administrative tasks such as maintaining records, managing attendance, and assisting with student performances and meal preparation. A key aspect of the role is fostering a respectful and encouraging environment for all participants and staff.

Requirements

  • Comfortable and adaptable to working with children and youth.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • 2-3 years of work experience with school-aged children (under 13 years of age).
  • An associate’s degree in child development, elementary education or related field OR two years of college with 18 credits in a related field OR a School-Age Child Care credential.
  • One year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must receive at least 15 hours of in-service training on specified subjects during the first year of operation and 30 hours of in-service training each two years thereafter.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to attain training to meet requirements).

Responsibilities

  • Attend all required training sessions/classes, staff meetings, and parent meetings.
  • Act as a team player for the advancement of the program.
  • Assist the GAINS Director.
  • Provide daily supervision and ensure the safety of participants.
  • Supervise youth counselors (high school students).
  • Plan and/or follow daily scheduled activities.
  • Lead participants to and from activity areas and field trips.
  • Teach and supervise organized games and activities.
  • Supervise SYEP participants, group leaders, and program aides.
  • Interact with city and state agencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in developing the daily schedule for the program.
  • Oversee all matters related to the summer program.
  • Maintain campers’ records up to date and readily available for inspections.
  • Manage on-line attendance.
  • Treat students with respect, avoiding screaming, degradation, insults, teasing, or physical abuse.
  • Encourage mutual respect among participants.
  • Teach and discipline children according to Child Care Regulations.
  • Facilitate student participation in the development and implementation of activities.
  • Assist with all student performances.
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of snacks/meals.
  • Plan and implement active and diverse gym programs.
  • Follow and implement curriculum as provided by the program.
  • Assist with the general cleaning of all program areas.
  • Perform other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Director.
