About The Position

The Funeral Home Area Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of multiple funeral home locations within a single line of business. This role focuses on fostering a sense of ownership and pride among staff, managing costs effectively, and driving profitable case volume growth. The Area Manager is accountable for short-term planning, achieving annual sales revenue and production targets, meeting Profit & Loss (P&L) goals, developing a professional and effective staff, and exceeding client family expectations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least seven (7) years of industry experience in applicable discipline with progressively increased responsibilities.
  • Funeral Home Management must have knowledge of industry competitive pricing, demographic patterns, and market competition.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience managing people and effectively managing budgets and expense control required.
  • Knowledgeable in Financial and Business acumen.
  • Professional interpersonal skills as well as cultural sensitivity and tactfulness to interact with a variety of cultures and language barriers.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite including mail, word, excel, & power point.
  • Applicable state Funeral Director Licensure required for Location Manager.

Nice To Haves

  • At least twelve (12) hours college courses in Finance & Accounting strongly preferred.
  • Technical schooling diploma.
  • Funeral Services / Mortuary Science preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science where required by state law.

Responsibilities

  • Develop annual business plan and budget, including financial, production, and revenue goals, in collaboration with local and Market Leadership.
  • Monitor and achieve annual financial goals, understanding industry finances and making sustainable business decisions.
  • Approve expenditures and invoices, including overtime.
  • Manage day-to-day activities to ensure on-time services and exceed client family expectations.
  • Remove barriers, encourage ideas, and identify improvements in operations.
  • Resolve moderately complex problems and provide resolution guidance to supervisors.
  • Ensure operating practices comply with federal and state regulations and Company policies.
  • Establish location goals and priorities, and develop, communicate, and monitor processes and procedures.
  • Manage frontline supervisors' responsibilities, expectations, and accountabilities.
  • Present and communicate Company and Market strategies, values, and goals to location staff.
  • Collaborate with local Management for resource sharing, ideas, and business or operational enhancements.
  • Work with Market Leadership and Corporate Departments on product, process, and technology needs.
  • Maintain buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean, manicured, and working order, budgeting for repairs.
  • Ensure all safety, quality control, and compliance standards are adhered to.
  • Develop a strong, trusting, and reliable team, understanding team members' career aspirations and providing development opportunities.
  • Constructively address issues and provide tangible and appropriate feedback.
  • Develop frontline supervisors' proactive and collaborative management style to increase employee engagement and minimize turnover.
  • Monitor training and licensing requirements.
  • Screen candidates and hire or promote a skilled and effective staff.
  • Establish pay, recommend pay increases, special pays, and career advancements.
  • Discipline staff as necessary and write development plans.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources throughout discipline, development, and termination processes.
  • Recommend and discuss terminations with Market Leadership.
  • Build and expand brand and product awareness to increase sales and market share.
  • Network with key community leaders to build business relationships.
  • Participate in community, civic, or other organizations for local promotional efforts.
  • Develop and implement plans to improve customer satisfaction index and on-line community reviews.
  • Assist with arrangements, preparation of visitation and/or services, driving, or transporting as needed, demonstrating leadership and teamwork.
