Flexion Inc•Madison, WI

About The Position

Flexion is seeking a Functional Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a passion for creating easy-to-use applications. This role will focus on large-scale, enterprise-wide systems, specifically ensuring the uninterrupted, secure, and compliant operation of critical federal acquisition and assistance systems. Flexion is an agile software company with over 25 years of experience, fostering a culture of autonomy, trust, and transparency. They empower self-sufficient and self-directed teams by hiring individuals who can solve complex problems collaboratively, requiring flexibility to assist with requirements, data, and change coordination. Every team member is a leader responsible for the team's success within a low-bureaucracy structure. Growth is fostered through mutual support, constructive feedback, respectful challenges, and integrating feedback into the daily workflow.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of related work experience
  • Deep functional knowledge of FPDS or comparable federal procurement or acquisition data systems
  • Experience writing functional requirements documents and acceptance criteria
  • Experience supporting change management on enterprise or government systems
  • Working SQL skills and experience supporting databases: querying, validating, and troubleshooting data
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of iterative development, incremental delivery, backlog management, and story definition
  • Ability to analyze information and draw conclusions by comparing and contrasting information and weighing different possible solutions
  • Ability to engage with all levels of the organization by listening, interacting, and communicating options in an efficient and impactful manner
  • Ability to work effectively with others to accomplish objectives and goals; proven success in a team-oriented environment

Nice To Haves

  • You can deliver in small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole.
  • You welcome change as a positive (instead of viewing it as “rework”) and never consider anything you deliver “final.”
  • Although you understand that what you deliver may not be complete, you never knowingly deliver something that is wrong or of poor quality.
  • You actively contribute to a learning team culture, offering and receiving feedback with curiosity and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the functional subject matter expert for FPDS, helping the team and stakeholders understand system behavior, business rules, data flows, and how the system fits into the bigger picture of federal acquisition.
  • Write and maintain functional requirements documents that capture business needs, rules, and acceptance criteria clearly enough for engineers and testers to act on.
  • Support change management for the system: assess the functional impact of proposed changes, document them, and help coordinate communication, readiness, and rollout with stakeholders and users.
  • Provide database support: investigate and troubleshoot data issues using SQL, validate data accuracy and integrity, and help trace discrepancies back to root causes.
  • Analyze reported problems to identify root causes, patterns, and potential business impacts, and differentiate between defects, enhancement requests, training needs, and configuration issues.
  • Coordinate with technical teams to ensure issues and changes are well understood, including reproduction steps and acceptance criteria.
  • Communicate findings, status, and expected timelines to stakeholders and customers.
  • Validate that delivered solutions address the business need before work is closed.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend process, product, or documentation improvements.
