About The Position

GDIT is looking for a Full Stack Platform Engineer to join their National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program. The role involves building and evolving a self-service Platform as a Service (PaaS) using Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enable customers to build, deploy, and operate application stacks. The ideal candidate will have full-stack software development experience, combined with knowledge of cloud infrastructure, automation, and modern DevOps practices. This engineer will work across the platform, integrating backend services with user-friendly web interfaces and developer tooling. Responsibilities include delivering well-scoped features independently, collaborating on technical designs, and automating/streamlining development and operational workflows. The successful candidate should enjoy solving technical problems, working in an Agile team, communicating technical ideas clearly, and continuously learning and sharing knowledge.

Requirements

  • B.S./B.A. and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing and delivering software as part of a collaborative engineering or Agile development team.
  • Experience independently implementing well-defined technical features while collaborating with senior engineers on larger or more complex design decisions.
  • Ability to communicate technical reasoning clearly and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Hands-on software development experience using TypeScript or JavaScript and Node.js.
  • Experience developing web user interfaces using React or a comparable frontend framework.
  • Experience designing, developing, or consuming REST APIs using JSON and OpenAPI or comparable API specifications and contracts.
  • Experience writing automated tests and diagnosing and resolving failures across frontend, backend, and integration layers.
  • Experience with Git-based software development practices, including branching, pull requests, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Working knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture concepts supporting application hosting, identity, storage, networking, deployment, and observability.
  • Working knowledge of containerized applications and Infrastructure as Code concepts, including experience working with Terraform or comparable technologies.
  • Understanding of application security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, and secure handling of application data, credentials, and secrets.
  • Ability to troubleshoot application, pipeline, deployment, and cloud integration issues using logs, metrics, and other diagnostic information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an Agile engineering environment and contribute effectively to technical discussions, code reviews, sprint activities, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Express, MongoDB/Mongoose or Amazon DocumentDB, and Redis/Valkey or similar caching and background processing technologies.
  • Familiarity with modern identity and access technologies and standards, including OIDC, OAuth 2.0, PKCE, JWT, RBAC, Microsoft Entra ID, or MSAL.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deliver features across the full technology stack, including TypeScript, Node.js/Express services, REST APIs, React-based user interfaces, and generated API clients.
  • Build accessible and responsive user experiences using established components, patterns, and development standards.
  • Develop and integrate platform capabilities with AWS services supporting application builds, deployments, identity, storage, networking, and observability.
  • Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) by making scoped enhancements to Terraform modules and collaborating with Platform Engineers to review infrastructure plans and changes.
  • Develop and maintain automated unit, integration, component, and end-to-end tests to improve software quality and reliability.
  • Diagnose and resolve application, pipeline, and deployment issues using logs, metrics, and other observability capabilities, and deliver fixes through established CI/CD workflows.
  • Develop and maintain API specifications, technical documentation, and other engineering artifacts necessary to support the platform and its users.
  • Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, design discussions, code reviews, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
