About The Position

GDIT is looking for a Full Stack Platform Engineer to join our National Institutes of Health (NIH) CIT Hosting and Storage Services Program. We are seeking a collaborative and technically curious engineer who can help build and evolve a self-service Platform as a Service (PaaS) that enables customers to build, deploy, and operate application stacks in Amazon Web Services (AWS). Our ideal candidate combines full-stack software development experience with an understanding of cloud infrastructure, automation, and modern DevOps practices. This engineer will contribute across the platform, connecting backend services with intuitive and reliable experiences through web interfaces and developer tooling. They will independently deliver well-scoped features, collaborate with other engineers on technical design and implementation decisions, and help automate and streamline development and operational workflows. The successful candidate will enjoy solving technical problems, working as part of an Agile team, communicating technical reasoning clearly, and continuously learning and sharing knowledge with others.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience developing and delivering software as part of a collaborative engineering or Agile development team.
  • Experience independently implementing well-defined technical features while collaborating with senior engineers on larger or more complex design decisions.
  • Ability to communicate technical reasoning clearly and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Hands-on software development experience using TypeScript or JavaScript and Node.js.
  • Experience developing web user interfaces using React or a comparable frontend framework.
  • Experience designing, developing, or consuming REST APIs using JSON and OpenAPI or comparable API specifications and contracts.
  • Experience writing automated tests and diagnosing and resolving failures across frontend, backend, and integration layers.
  • Experience with Git-based software development practices, including branching, pull requests, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Working knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture concepts supporting application hosting, identity, storage, networking, deployment, and observability.
  • Working knowledge of containerized applications and Infrastructure as Code concepts, including experience working with Terraform or comparable technologies.
  • Understanding of application security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, and secure handling of application data, credentials, and secrets.
  • Ability to troubleshoot application, pipeline, deployment, and cloud integration issues using logs, metrics, and other diagnostic information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an Agile engineering environment and contribute effectively to technical discussions, code reviews, sprint activities, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Express, MongoDB/Mongoose or Amazon DocumentDB, and Redis/Valkey or similar caching and background processing technologies.
  • Familiarity with modern identity and access technologies and standards, including OIDC, OAuth 2.0, PKCE, JWT, RBAC, Microsoft Entra ID, or MSAL.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deliver features across the full technology stack, including TypeScript, Node.js/Express services, REST APIs, React-based user interfaces, and generated API clients.
  • Build accessible and responsive user experiences using established components, patterns, and development standards.
  • Develop and integrate platform capabilities with AWS services supporting application builds, deployments, identity, storage, networking, and observability.
  • Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) by making scoped enhancements to Terraform modules and collaborating with Platform Engineers to review infrastructure plans and changes.
  • Develop and maintain automated unit, integration, component, and end-to-end tests to improve software quality and reliability.
  • Diagnose and resolve application, pipeline, and deployment issues using logs, metrics, and other observability capabilities, and deliver fixes through established CI/CD workflows.
  • Develop and maintain API specifications, technical documentation, and other engineering artifacts necessary to support the platform and its users.
  • Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, design discussions, code reviews, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
