Project Employee, Full Stack Engineer - Team Business Platforms

National Basketball Association (NBA)•New York, NY
•$130,000 - $149,500

About The Position

The NBA is seeking a Full Stack Engineer to build a centralized knowledge platform for partner organizations. The platform will provide a role-aware entry point that brings together reporting, a strategy library, and operational applications. The engineer will build features end to end, spanning interfaces, APIs, and data, using Python, modern JavaScript or TypeScript, Microsoft Azure, and AI semantic layers on the Azure AI platform. This is a build-from-here role within a large organization, involving work with unfamiliar systems, independent decision-making, and development of institutional product knowledge at scale. The engineer will help build systems for NBA teams to support revenue, efficiency, and fandom. The work includes product engineering, AI-powered search and natural-language querying, Azure platform operations, and collaboration with product management and colleagues across marketing, business operations, and analytics. Eligible employees currently have the option to work remotely one day per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience shipping production web applications as part of an engineering team, including user-facing interfaces and supporting services.
  • Demonstrated experience building and running applications on Microsoft Azure, including at least one production workload using Azure AI services.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Search, and Azure AI Foundry to build a retrieval-augmented or natural-language application used by real users.
  • Working command of Azure compute, storage, managed databases, secrets, and Microsoft Entra ID as a consumer of those services.
  • Proficiency in Python and strong TypeScript skills with a modern frontend framework.
  • Experience with REST API design and strong SQL skills across relational databases and cloud data platforms.
  • Practical understanding of AI application patterns, including RAG, embeddings and vector search, semantic layers, tool calling, evaluation, and grounding.
  • Strong Git and collaborative development practices, including CI/CD and written documentation.
  • Ability to work in unfamiliar codebases and cloud environments, extend them safely, and document findings.
  • Comfort working independently and shaping processes in an early-stage, start-up-style team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a start-up or on a founding or early-stage product team.
  • Azure AI Engineer Associate certification, Azure Developer Associate certification, or equivalent.
  • Experience building a centralized knowledge platform, internal data portal, or enterprise search product, including permission-aware retrieval.
  • Experience with semantic or metric layers over a data warehouse.
  • Experience with Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, SharePoint and Microsoft Graph, or embedding BI content such as Tableau or Power BI with row- and role-level security.
  • Interest in or experience with sports business, such as ticketing, partnerships, marketing, or analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship end-to-end features, including Nuxt-based interfaces, Python backend services deployed as Azure services, REST APIs, and underlying data models.
  • Build search, tagging, content discovery, and role-aware views that limit access to appropriate content for each organization.
  • Write and optimize SQL; build connectors and migration pipelines to move an enterprise document library into a structured, tagged repository at volume.
  • Build an AI semantic layer on the Azure AI platform, including retrieval-augmented search and natural-language querying using Azure AI Search and Azure OpenAI models.
  • Design content ingestion for retrieval, including chunking, embedding, security trimming, and index maintenance.
  • Drive enablement of business skills, advanced analytics modeling, and fan activation tools within team business platforms.
  • Share ownership of Azure environments, CI/CD, monitoring, and enterprise identity integration with the engineering team.
  • Follow engineering standards including Git, code review, automated testing, and containerized local development; document features, data flows, and inherited configuration.
  • Partner with product management and communicate with non-technical colleagues across marketing, business operations, and analytics.
  • Work independently in unfamiliar codebases and cloud environments, extending systems safely and documenting discoveries.
