About The Position

Capital One is seeking a Full-stack Software Engineer to help drive a major technology transformation. The role leads diverse technology projects and developers working with distributed microservices and full-stack systems, and delivers cloud-based solutions that support regulatory needs and customer experiences. The engineer provides technical leadership across Agile teams, partners with product managers and architects, establishes standards for design, development, and operational excellence, and helps shape long-term technology strategy in a “you build it, you own it” environment. The role also emphasizes learning and evaluating emerging technologies, mentoring engineers, reducing technical debt, improving performance, and contributing to technology communities. Technologies mentioned include Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open-source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS tools and services.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
• At least 4 years of software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 7+ years of coding experience with more than two of the following: Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
• 3+ years of experience with databases and database management systems.
• 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• 4+ years of experience contributing to open-source frameworks.
• 3+ years of experience with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• 4+ years of experience creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks.
• 3+ years of experience using Git-based version-control systems such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket.
• 3+ years of experience troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Experience leveraging modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• 1+ year of experience mentoring engineers and driving professional development within technical teams.
• 1+ year of experience leveraging observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Experience with interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity using capabilities beyond basic code completion.
• Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead a portfolio of technology projects and a team of developers building distributed microservices and full-stack systems to meet company regulatory needs.
• Share knowledge of technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal and external technology communities, and mentor engineering community members.
• Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions and customer experiences.
• Use programming languages, databases, container orchestration services, and cloud tools and services to build solutions.
• Provide technical leadership and direction across Agile teams, setting standards for design, development, and operational excellence.
• Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.
• Identify improvement opportunities, implement targeted refactoring, and help reduce technical debt and enhance system performance.
• Influence long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging tools and practices in a “you build it, you own it” environment.
