About The Position

This position is for a Full Professor in Faculty Affairs at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). The role focuses on the education and professional development of faculty, enhancing their roles as educators, mentors, and leaders. The position involves strategic planning, collaboration with academic health system partners, and participation in various committees related to accreditation and faculty development. The professor will also be responsible for scholarly activity and research, and may assume a leadership role such as Director of Faculty Affairs. The position is part-time (30% FTE), permanent, and funded by General Funds, with an anticipated start date in mid-August 2026, subject to position clearance. The position is annually renewable based on performance.

Requirements

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Minimum four (4) years at the rank of Associate Professor at an accredited medical school.
  • Eligible for unrestricted Hawai’i Medical License at time of hire.
  • ABMS Board certification or maintenance of board certification.
  • Evidence of effective medical education activities, scholarly/research activity, educational or clinical administration is required.
  • Scholarly/research or administrative activity may be in areas that affect health, patient care, or the methods and techniques of medical education.
  • Evidence of the generation of new knowledge in clinical care, care processes, or medical education is crucial to improving the quality and effectiveness of the primary teaching function of any medical school.
  • Evidence of timely publication of results in peer-reviewed venues (i.e., journals, online collaboratives/portals, local or national conferences) that include at least co-authorship of publications together with sufficient independent or group research/scholarship activity to justify the reasonable expectation that the applicant will develop into an effective and productive scholar.
  • Demonstrated medical education administrative activities that involve curriculum development and oversight, involved with the development of coursework for faculty, medical students, and/or residents/fellows.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing administrative or educational synergies between divisions or programs within a clinical department or academic unit.
  • Leadership of a curricular component of a UME or GME program (i.e., a series, workshops, longitudinal curriculum).
  • Experience serving in prior GME or Department/Program leadership roles such as Program Director, Associate Program Director, Department Chair, or Vice Chair.
  • Experience in developing administrative partnerships and relationships between UME or GME programs/clinical departments and/or medical education institutions, including health systems or hospitals.
  • Advanced study in medical education.

Responsibilities

  • Engages in the education and professional development of faculty to enhance their roles as educators, mentors, educational leaders, and role models of professionalism.
  • Participates in strategic planning and faculty development efforts at and between academic health system partners and across JABSOM with various offices and leads.
  • Convenes and facilitates Faculty Development Working Group meetings.
  • Participates in meetings and initiatives to ensure strategic alignment among faculty affairs, faculty development, and institution-wide and health-system-focused professionalism, well-being, and organizational safety efforts.
  • Maintains a strong, effective, proactive, and collaborative team-based relationship with Department Chairs and health system leadership.
  • Assumes potential leadership role as requested, which may include serving as the Director of Faculty Affairs for JABSOM.
  • Assists the Department Chair in faculty development through regular attendance at Clinical Chairs and JABSOM leadership meetings, and additional workshops/seminars as needed.
  • Stays current with issues and trends discussed in the AAMC Group on Faculty Affairs, LCME, ACGME, and other accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in the LCME Compliance Committee and other accreditation-related committees as needed, and will be the primary author of the faculty affairs and faculty development sections of accreditation reports.
  • Supervises and evaluates the Faculty Development Program Specialist and Academic Support Specialist.
  • Serves on JABSOM and University Committees and other relevant local, regional, national, or international committees.
  • Conducts scholarly activity and research.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
