About The Position

STV is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector with freight rail experience to support rail infrastructure projects throughout the nationwide rail network. This role involves overseeing and inspecting construction activities related to freight rail infrastructure, ensuring compliance with contract documents, railroad standards, and safety regulations. The inspector will identify and document nonconforming work, maintain accurate project documentation, assist with schedule coordination, and supervise other inspectors. Effective communication with clients, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders is crucial.

Requirements

  • 8 plus years of construction engineering and inspection experience, preferably with freight rail, railroad, or heavy civil transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supporting freight rail owners, Class I railroads, short line railroads, industrial rail clients, or rail-served facilities is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of freight rail construction practices, contract administration, field documentation, and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of rail construction materials and methods, including track structure, ballast, drainage, crossings, grading, utilities, and related civil work.
  • Ability to perform quantity calculations, review field measurements, and support engineering computations tied to construction progress and payment documentation.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
  • Familiarity with FRA Track Safety Standards, including 49 CFR Part 213 and roadway worker safety requirements under 49 CFR Part 214, is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and inspect construction activities related to freight rail infrastructure, including track, crossings, yards, sidings, industrial leads, and related civil improvements.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with contract documents, railroad standards, project specifications, and applicable federal and state rail safety requirements.
  • Identify and document nonconforming work in the field and help drive timely corrective action with contractors and project stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including RFIs, submittmits, daily inspection reports, pay quantities, field directives, and change order support.
  • Assist with schedule coordination, field progress tracking, outage planning, and documentation of construction activities across active freight rail corridors.
  • Supervise, mentor, and coordinate inspectors and field technicians to ensure proper site coverage, safety awareness, and consistent inspection documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with freight rail clients, contractors, engineers, agencies, utility representatives, and local stakeholders.
  • Prepare field correspondence, inspection reports, issue logs, and recommendations related to freight rail construction activities.
