About The Position

The European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) US subsidiary, Eurovision News Americas (ENA), is looking for freelance news producers. ENA is the US subsidiary of the EBU's News operations, primarily serving the Eurovision News Exchange (EVN), which has been in operation since 1961 and is the biggest exchange of its kind. The EVN is built upon a network of nearly 70 EBU Member and sublicensee newsrooms in over 50 countries and is founded on principles of editorial integrity, solidarity, and sharing of knowledge and best practices. In addition to serving the EVN, Eurovision News Americas provides news-related broadcast services and office space to EBU Members and affiliates and is an advocate for public service journalism in the Americas.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working as a journalist in TV, radio and/or digital newsrooms/teams
  • Strong journalistic skills and demonstrable knowledge of global news and current affairs
  • Proficiency/aptitude in the use of broadcasting news technology and video editing (IT, production facilities and network systems)
  • Understanding and implementation of journalistic principles and ethics
  • Knowledge of social media newsgathering and verification technologies or a willingness to learn
  • Understanding of copyright
  • Ability to handle clients, providers and partners from diverse international backgrounds with patience and diplomacy
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and those of a team, under pressure
  • Experience of dealing with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to make good decisions calmly and quickly, even when limited information is available
  • High level of interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with international colleagues in other locations worldwide
  • Passionate about working as part of an international team and collaborating for the best overall outcome
  • A demonstrable understanding of the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • English is a must
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States. ENA does not sponsor visas, including I visas.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently ensure that the most appropriate, high quality and up-to-date visual images and information are available for participants in the Eurovision News Exchange pertaining to the Americas
  • Write original copy, or source, edit, correct and supplement written texts provided by third parties to accompany content in the Eurovision News Exchange
  • Provide background information to colleagues and coordinate with Geneva and third parties to ensure all the essential elements of complex stories in the news are captured and distributed efficiently
  • Do basic video and audio editing, working as a team member in Washington and/or under the direction of the News Editor in Geneva
  • Operate bespoke IT applications and some technical equipment (with training)
  • Be in constant contact with the journalists and broadcast teams of members based in the Americas, and clients, by sharing information, best practices and responding to their requests
  • Act as an ambassador for Eurovision News Americas towards EBU Members and stakeholders to promote our activities and solicit feedback
