About The Position

Freelance Item Writers work with the Content Development team within the Assessment Services department. Item Writers play a critical role in the development of content for English language assessments, which provide evidence of English proficiency for academic admissions and government immigration programs. Item Writers work on a piece rate basis rather than hourly and report to the Content Development Manager.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate or higher degree in English, Linguistics, Education, TESL, or related discipline
  • Exceptional English writing and editing skills and ability to apply feedback
  • Ability to author, review, and edit English language assessment content across a range of subject areas and difficulty levels
  • ESL/EFL teaching and/or curriculum development experience
  • Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency, or a valid Canadian work permit

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and/or the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is an asset
  • TESL/TESOL/CELTA certification is an asset
  • Item writing experience is preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Authoring unique passages and test items for English language assessments
  • Completing item writing training packages prior to commencing work
  • Attending remote training sessions and ongoing training activities as needed
  • Reviewing and editing passages and items according to guidelines and feedback
  • Attending and actively participating in online item review workshops
  • Following test specifications and item writing best practices
  • Adhering to test security protocol and safeguarding confidentiality
  • Meeting content deadlines and managing assignment workload
  • Communicating effectively with the Content Development team
  • Working from a secure and private work location within Canada
