Founding Designer

About The Position

Finch is seeking its first product designer to establish and scale the design practice within the company. This role is crucial at a time when design can significantly impact the product's trajectory. The designer will work directly with founders, product leadership, and engineering to bring structure and discovery to existing ad hoc design processes. The primary focus will be on the external-facing case management tool, which is currently in beta. The users of this tool are legal operators and law firm partners who manage high-stakes, time-sensitive casework. The designer will also partner with engineers who have not previously had a dedicated design collaborator.

Requirements

  • 4–10 years as a product designer with direct ownership of complex workflows, ideally at a recognizable consumer or B2B company.
  • Demonstrated pattern of conducting discovery before designing, by engaging directly with users.
  • Experience designing operationally intensive workflow software (B2B, ops-heavy, or similarly complex domains), not just consumer or mobile UI.
  • Comfort thinking in code and working closely with engineering, rather than solely handing off static Figma files.
  • Track record of holding and defending design decisions with reasoning, while maintaining collaborative relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Both consumer and B2B-operational experience.
  • Comfort with AI-native design tools for independent shipping of simple changes.
  • Experience supporting brand or marketing work alongside product design.
  • Genuine curiosity about the personal injury or legal domain, or a track record of quickly immersing in unfamiliar, complex industries.

Responsibilities

  • Own design across Finch's entire surface area – product, brand, and emerging AI experiences.
  • Define the scope of the design role as the company grows.
  • Own product design end-to-end for Finch's external-facing case management tool.
  • Conduct discovery by sitting with attorneys and paralegals to understand their workflows and identify friction points.
  • Develop systems-level solutions rather than isolated patches.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, working near code and shipping simple changes (copy, layout, styling) directly.
  • Extend the external product experience to internal paralegal tools as they converge.
  • Hold a strong point of view in design reviews and provide reasoned pushback.
  • Assist with brand or marketing work when the contract brand designer is at capacity.

Benefits

  • Access to counsel in life’s biggest moments.
  • Modern approach to consumer law.
  • Automates administrative work.
  • Puts clients first.
  • Pre-litigation partner of choice for top personal injury firms.
  • Expert operators and purpose-built AI working together.
  • Handles every step of pre-lit, from intake and claim opening to medical records, lien management, and demands.
  • Backed by Sequoia, Redpoint, and founders/CEOs of companies like DoorDash, Ironclad, and Digits.
  • Opportunity to rebuild how law serves everyday Americans.
  • Hiring exceptional operators to scale nationwide.
  • Safe, inclusive, and equitable environment.
  • Welcomes and supports individuals from all backgrounds and lived experiences.
  • Diversity strengthens the team, enriches perspectives, and empowers better service to clients and communities.
  • Inclusion as a practice.
