About The Position

Foundation Technician-A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment/systems. This role requires a 6-8 year continuous working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation equipment, apparatus, and wiring. The position involves working in confined spaces and elevated areas, operating various construction equipment specific to the trade. A Foundation Technician A may work independently or with others, occasionally working long hours during emergency conditions. This position should be able to lead/coach subordinates on the crew and works at various locations. Travel to another state may be required depending on customer demands.

Requirements

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.
  • Must possess a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Must supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
  • Must be able to work independently or with others.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment: Bucket, derrick and boom trucks, Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders, Articulating Man-lifts, Pressure Diggers, Trenchers, Track Crawler Loader/Backhoe, Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts.
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
  • Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
  • 90% Travel Required.
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Must be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
  • Ability to lead/coach subordinates on the crew.
  • Ability to develop and interpret a material list.
  • Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when requested.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems.
  • Works with concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection.
  • Works with buswork (High and Low Voltage).
  • Works with Airbreak / Hookstick Switches.
  • Performs control cable terminations (High / Low Voltage).
  • Works with control buildings.
  • Works with conduit and duck banks.
  • Performs capacitor bank installations.
  • Works with 23kv- 230 kv Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers.
  • Works with circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches.
  • Responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions.
  • Frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Interprets substation structural drawings (i.e. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans) and communicates with customers and subordinates.
  • Establishes grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable trough in new and existing stations.
  • Traces out phasing in a substation and verifies to the three line diagrams.
  • Determines the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
  • Runs the job during the absence of the Foreman.
