About The Position

Freire Schools is seeking a Foundation Literacy Teacher for the 26-27 school year at TECH Freire Charter School in north Philadelphia. This role focuses on closing literacy gaps for 9th-grade students who may be several years behind in reading. The teacher will provide targeted instruction using a scripted direct instruction curriculum based on the science of reading, empowering students to access various texts and become stronger readers. The position is a full classroom teacher role, not a 1:1 interventionist role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid certification in Special Education, English Language Arts, Reading Specialist, Elementary or Middle Grades General Certification.
  • Ability to form strong relationships with students and motivate them to push past struggle.
  • A belief that literacy is an equity issue, and an understanding that their role will be to close the gaps that our students have in their foundational reading skills.
  • A desire to help all of our students become grade-level readers.

Responsibilities

  • Teach classes averaging from 8-12 students.
  • Deliver direct-instruction reading intervention grounded in the science of reading.
  • Utilize Corrective Reading Curriculum.
  • Closely monitor student progress and reteach particular skills as necessary.
  • Cultivate the belief that literacy is a tool for liberation and empowerment, and that students are capable of becoming stronger readers.
