About The Position

The Foster Care Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the foster care program. This role involves building a network for foster care animals, coordinating placements as animals become available, and updating spreadsheets to ensure all animal placements are organized and current. The position also requires assisting the adoption department during busy periods and supporting the rescue coordinator as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be energetic and enthusiastic
  • Computer literate with the ability to quickly learn software specific to animal shelters
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision
  • Flexible with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as, in a team environment
  • Ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems, as well as, aggressive tendencies

Responsibilities

  • Perform foster care trainings and presentations for foster parents, including topics like bottle feeding and health risk remediation.
  • Counsel new foster families on animal care and behavior characteristics.
  • Facilitate the foster care process by assisting applicants, reviewing applications, making decisions on foster care approval or denial, and communicating with foster families courteously, even when declining a request.
  • Organize foster care paperwork, maintaining complete files and ensuring accuracy by entering information into the shelter software program.
  • Schedule medical appointments with the clinic for animals (excluding vaccinations), and send out reminder emails and phone calls.
  • Contact all foster families at least once a week for check-ins and follow-ups.
  • Willingness to take home neonates, kittens, and puppies to prevent euthanasia while seeking appropriate foster homes.
  • Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, promoting a humane and caring attitude.
  • Develop a working knowledge of all animals available for adoption through hands-on interaction, paperwork review, and database information.
  • Develop specific knowledge of each animal in the shelter, including name, type, age, gender, breed/mix characteristics, and behavioral considerations.
  • Assist with the daily movement of animals from kennels to the clinic.
  • Communicate and coordinate animal transfers to and from Pet Smart EAC/Shelter.
  • Coordinate and complete the surgery list for kennel animals.
  • Work with the rescue coordinator and provide assistance as needed.
  • Maintain monthly hours for fosters.
  • Maintain all foster care paperwork policy and procedures on the N drive.
