About The Position

RO Writer is hiring its first Forward Deployed Engineer to work directly with independent auto repair shops and build AI solutions for their operational workflows. The role combines time in customer shops with software development. The engineer will identify workflow problems, build solutions, and help turn successful field implementations into product features. The role reports to the General Manager and will help define the function at RO Writer. The initial focus is automating repair order creation by using AI to turn inspections, technician notes, and customer conversations into accurate repair orders and estimates ready for review. The work includes developing AI-powered workflows and agents, integrating with RO Writer and third-party systems, evaluating and monitoring AI output, running customer pilots, and documenting learnings for internal teams. Customer engagement may be remote or on-site, and periodic travel to customer shops is required. This is a remote-first, full-time position. The estimated annual base salary range is USD $117,000–$143,000. Requirements

Professional software engineering experience with Python and/or TypeScript.
Hands-on experience building with LLMs, including prompt design, agents or tool use, RAG, and evaluating output quality.
Ability to explain AI-driven development methods that have worked over the past 18 months, including how you plan, build, test, and ship software with AI and what you would do differently.
Experience working in small teams to produce applications and modules that improve or simplify end-user workflows.
A track record of measurable results, such as end-user benefit, financial impact, time saved, cost reduced, revenue gained, or adoption.
Strong experience building and consuming APIs and integrating with third-party systems.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical ideas to non-technical shop owners and listen effectively.
Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to take a real-world problem to a working solution with little hand-holding.
Willingness to travel periodically to customer shops.

Nice To Haves

Experience in automotive, auto repair, or small-business/vertical SaaS.
Experience in a customer-facing technical role, such as solutions engineering, implementation, or technical consulting.
Familiarity with cloud platforms and modern deployment practices.
Experience using AI coding tools in daily work.

Responsibilities

Embed with customers remotely and on-site to understand shop operations and identify lost time and revenue.
Identify high-impact workflow problems and turn them into scoped, shippable solutions.
Design, build, and deploy AI-powered workflows and agents using LLMs, RAG, and tool use to automate tasks such as repair order writing, estimating, and parts sourcing.
Integrate with RO Writer's platform and third-party systems, including parts catalogs, accounting, and payments, through APIs.
Build evaluation and monitoring systems to ensure AI output is accurate, grounded, and trustworthy.
Run customer pilots, gather feedback, and iterate quickly.
Partner with Product and Engineering to turn successful field solutions into scalable product features.
Document learnings and create playbooks for Support, Training, and Customer Success teams.
Represent the voice of the customer inside engineering.
