Forward-Deployed Engineer

ProxSan Francisco, CA
Hybrid

About The Position

This is a travel-heavy engineering role where you will own customer deployments of Prox, a new AI product specialist for manufacturers. You will travel on-site to customer locations such as dealerships, service desks, and factory offices to launch deployments, debug issues, measure user trust, and translate rollout challenges into product improvements. You will work directly with customers, founders, and founding engineers, writing code, shaping product strategy, building deployment infrastructure, running evaluations, handling rollout analytics, and fixing issues in the core platform. The goal is to ensure Prox is reliable, accurate, fast, stable, easy to use, measurable, and trusted by end-users across distributed customer networks, from initial champions to large-scale rollouts across hundreds of locations.

Requirements

  • Strong engineering skills: ability to build, debug, ship, and reason about systems without a perfect spec.
  • Customer-facing skills: ability to communicate effectively with VPs, dealer principals, support reps, and technicians.
  • Operational intensity: ability to manage complex rollouts with many moving parts and ensure resolution of all issues.
  • Good product taste: ability to distinguish between technical functionality and user trust.
  • Comfort with travel: expectation of meaningful customer travel and enjoyment of close proximity to the field.
  • High agency: proactive problem-solving to unblock rollouts by identifying and addressing customer issues, logs, workflows, queries, or sessions.
  • Clear writing skills: ability to translate messy customer feedback into concise issues, specs, rollout notes, postmortems, and product decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Own customer deployments from kickoff to successful rollout, including configuring Prox, testing use cases, training users, and monitoring adoption.
  • Help roll Prox out across distributed customer networks like dealerships, support teams, sales teams, and field reps, adapting the product for different surfaces (tablet, desktop, web, etc.).
  • Build tests to evaluate deployment readiness, including accuracy of answers, compatibility, configuration, and citation quality.
  • Define and track rollout metrics such as adoption, usage, answer quality, escalation rates, and customer-reported issues.
  • Act as a product feedback loop by turning customer pain points into product work, writing specifications, reproducing issues, and collaborating with engineers to ship fixes.
  • Travel to customer sites to work closely with users, observe product usage, conduct trainings, debug workflows in person, and build trust.
