About The Position

The Material Handler 1- Forklift Operator is responsible for loading, unloading, and moving material within or near the manufacturing plant, yard, or work site by hand (general labor/manual pallet jack) or with the use of industrial vehicles such as sit-down forklift, stand-up forklift, or electric pallet jack.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Frequently required to walk; use hands to fingers, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to stand; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
  • Sit-Down Forklift License

Responsibilities

  • Reads work orders or follow oral instructions to determine materials or containers to be moved.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand, pallet jack, or forklift.
  • Loads materials into vehicles and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.
  • Secures lifting attachments to materials and conveys load to destination or signals crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet.
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers.
  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together.
  • Removes samples of materials, labels with identifying information, and takes samples to laboratory for analysis.
  • Lifts heavy objects by hand or with power hoist, and maintains a clean work area including machines, and equipment to assist machine operators.
  • Make simple adjustments or repairs such as realigning belts or replacing rollers.
  • Assemble crates to contain products such as machines or vehicles.
  • Operates industrial vehicles or electric pallet jack to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Assist with yearly inventory.
