About The Position

This is a professional and supervisory position responsible for developing, directing, and coordinating all forest management activities on Sandy Creek State Forest, Pine Log State Forest, and Pt. Washington State Forest. The duties require the incumbent to work closely with scientists, industry representatives, water management district representatives, game and fish biologists and other state and federal agencies on state land management. The incumbent must be capable of working independently in gathering and assembling data to effectively manage all forests. The Forestry Operations Administrator performs daily supervision of this employee.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and seven (7) years of forestry experience; or
  • A bachelor's degree (4 years) from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry and three (3) years of forestry experience; or
  • A master's degree (6 years) from an accredited college or university with major course of study in forestry and two (2) years of forestry experience.
  • Possession of a valid class E driver license.

Responsibilities

  • Communicating with, motivating, providing, or coordinating training, and directing the work of subordinates.
  • Completing timely performance appraisals, developing accurate work plans, and timely approving attendance and leave for each subordinate.
  • Making recommendations for special pay increases, reclassifications, hiring, and disciplinary actions, when appropriate.
  • Setting up and carrying out the forest management plan on assigned forests.
  • Managing an all-season fire management program, forest inventory (including rare, threatened, and endangered plant and animal species), timber sales and management of ecosystem restoration activities, road maintenance and repairs, and establishment and maintenance of recreation sites.
  • Directing and supervising the work of subordinates in their day-to-day activities; ensuring that these positions are fully utilized on the state forests and for fire management activities.
  • Overseeing the development of Sandy Creek State Forest.
  • Providing wildfire and emergency response support as directed.
  • Assisting in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation.
  • Assisting in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulations.
  • Maintaining contact with cooperating agencies (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Division of Historical Resources, Department of State), environmental organizations and organizing user groups to ensure cooperative efforts and input into the management of the forest.
  • Keeping abreast and knowledgeable of forestry topics, ecosystems management and rare and endangered species laws.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned, which may include the handling of revenue.
