About The Position

Algoma Power Inc. is an electric distribution company that serves approximately 12,000 customers in the district of Algoma with over more than 1,800 kilometers of distribution lines in an area that covers approximately 14,200 square kilometers. Algoma Power Inc. is a subsidiary of FortisOntario Inc. (“FortisOntario”) which is headquartered in Fort Erie and has operations in electricity transmission and distribution primarily located in Fort Erie, Port Colborne, Cornwall, Gananoque and the district of Algoma. FortisOntario is the only investor-owned electric distribution utility in Ontario and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis Inc. (“Fortis”). Fortis is the largest investor-owned distribution utility in Canada. Algoma Power Inc. currently has opportunities working out of our Sault Ste. Marie work centre location for a: FORESTRY LABOURER (TEMPORARY (up to 6 Month Contract)). Under the direction of the Supervisor, or delegate, the Forestry Labourer will assist Utility Arborists in the day to day work of vegetation management activities, including but not limited to right-of-way clearing and maintenance, line clearing, unplanned outage response, maintenance and operations of tools and equipment. The Forestry Labourer will ensure all work assigned is performed efficiently and will have a high regard for health, safety and the environment, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, policies, procedures and standards and must be capable of identifying workplace hazards and be able to utilize all reasonable barriers to ensure safe work performance.

Requirements

  • Previous utility line clearing experience
  • A valid Ontario (class “G”) driver’s license with an excellent driving record
  • Line Clearing Safety and Awareness or Electrical Safety and Awareness Certification
  • Traffic Control for Temporary Work Zones in Ontario Book 7 Certification 2022
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of equipment, standards, and practices applicable to the work
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment as required
  • Must have working knowledge of applicable Provincial Safety Regulations, Provincial Environmental Regulations, Electrical and Utility safety rules and safe work guidelines
  • Good communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers and industry partners

Nice To Haves

  • A valid Ontario “D” driver’s license or the ability to obtain is considered an asset
  • Chainsaw Certification is an asset
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is an asset
