About The Position

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) is seeking a Forester 2 to support the Good Neighbor Authority Program. This position will be responsible for planning, designing, and implementing forest management projects on federal lands in western Montana, in collaboration with the US Forest Service. The role involves improving forest health, reducing hazardous fuels, and managing timber harvests. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in forest management or a related resource management field.
  • Minimum one year of job-related professional forest management experience.
  • Working knowledge of tools and authorities such as Good Neighbor Authority.
  • Working knowledge of NEPA and Farm Bill categorical exclusion provisions.
  • Basic understanding of DNRC timber sale and service contracting, sale administration, and policies and procedures.
  • Experience with word, excel, outlook, GIS programs.
  • Skills in data collection and instruments and software.
  • Experienced in working alone in the field, including driving in winter conditions, operating ATVs, and navigating with map and compass.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to individuals, groups, and representatives from other organizations.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct multiple resources to complete work objectives and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • A valid driver's license with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, designing, and implementing forest management projects on federal lands under the Good Neighbor Authority.
  • Collaborating with federal partners, other agencies, local governments, and stakeholders to plan and manage forest management projects across multiple ownerships.
  • Administering, overseeing, and implementing forest management activities on federal lands according to Good Neighbor Authority and DNRC timber sale contract and administration rules.
  • Providing program and project expertise, responding to inquiries, and communicating project outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Potentially supervising foresters and seasonal employees, including responsibilities for time approval, disciplinary action, and hiring.
