About The Position

This is an internal agency opportunity for current employees of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Forest Area Supervisor is responsible for managing long-term forest management programs, fire control and prevention programs, and supervising personnel within their assigned geographic area. This role requires significant interaction with private landowners, industry representatives, and public agencies, as well as ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures. The incumbent must be fire certified as a forestry firefighter and may be required to perform the tasks of a Certified Wildland Firefighter.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) years of experience in Forestry experience; OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in Forestry and two (2) years of Forestry experience; OR A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in Forestry and one (1) year of Forestry experience.
  • Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent, and at least 18 years of age.
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to certification or perjury/false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more, or dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
  • Must submit a fingerprint card with a current processing fee.
  • Must have good moral character as determined by investigation.
  • Must be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination.
  • Must be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one (1) year immediately preceding application.
  • Possession of a valid driver license.
  • All fields in the Candidate Profile must be completed.
  • Work history, duties and responsibilities, hours worked, supervisor, and formal education fields must be filled out to determine qualifications.
  • Responses to Qualifying Questions must be verifiable in the Candidate Profile.
  • Must obtain a Certificate of Compliance, including satisfactory completion of a fire fighter training program approved by the Division.
  • Must live within thirty (30) miles of the assigned headquarters located at 4100 N, Hwy. 29, Cantonment, Florida, throughout employment.
  • Successful applicant must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting.

Nice To Haves

  • Fire certified as a forestry firefighter under Chapter 633, F.S.
  • May be required to perform the tasks of a Certified Wildland Firefighter in accordance with Florida Forest Service (FFS) Policy and Procedure 225.00, Appendix B.

Responsibilities

  • Personnel management including recruitment, scheduling, supervision, discipline, training, and performance appraisals.
  • Ensuring operational procedures and processes result in accountability and compliance with FFS and department policies.
  • Developing and implementing long-term forest management programs for assigned geographic areas.
  • Maximizing utilization of woodlands through contact with private forest landowners, industry, and public agencies.
  • Supervising personnel responsible for woodland inspections, silvicultural recommendations, timber harvesting and marketing assistance, reforestation assistance, prescription burning, insect and disease recognition and control advice, and forest products utilization assistance.
  • Developing and implementing active fire control and prevention programs.
  • Coordinating and supervising forest fire detection, suppression, and presuppression activities.
  • Assisting in training and equipping rural fire departments.
  • Setting program work goals for fire control and reporting results.
  • Enforcing applicable fire and timber products laws.
  • Maintaining FFS-owned forest equipment in the area of responsibility.
  • Ensuring the safety of personnel under their supervision.
  • Administering the open burning program.
  • Training assigned personnel in fire control, forest management, and state lands management.
  • Coordinating training programs for fire departments, forest landowners, and related state and federal agencies.
  • Coordinating and supervising a public information and education program on forest fire prevention.
  • Preparing budget requests, administering approved funds, and reporting budget status.
  • Managing budgets, dollars, and resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) efficiently and accountably.
  • Maintaining contact with public and governmental leaders, forest industry personnel, and law enforcement agencies.
  • Supervising maintenance and construction of FFS-owned facilities.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Successfully completing all training requirements for the position within the designated time period and in accordance with established training performance standards.
