About The Position

This part-time position provides mental health services including screening, counseling, crisis intervention, and continuing care services for minors housed in the County's Juvenile Hall facility. The role involves providing supportive individual and group counseling, addressing family issues, managing emotional and psychiatric disorders, and facilitating transitions from Juvenile Hall with appropriate resource referrals. The counselor will also perform psychological assessments, support psychiatrist-led medication management, respond to crisis situations, and provide educational information to Juvenile Hall staff and probation personnel. This role is distinguished by its licensing requirements and the responsibility for providing professional forensic services.

Requirements

  • Master's degree with a major in social work, clinical or counseling psychology, or a closely related behavioral science field.
  • Completion of a university-approved clinical internship in a mental health agency.
  • One year of professional, post-master's experience providing treatment and counseling in a mental health setting.
  • Possession of a valid license issued by the State of California: Clinical Social Worker; Marriage, Family and Child Counseling; or a licensed Clinical Psychologist.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • The ability to assess patient behavior, including emotional and mental problems, and develop and implement effective treatment plans.
  • The ability to conduct effective and appropriate individual and group therapy.
  • The ability to analyze situations accurately, make recommendations, and take appropriate action.
  • The ability to analyze data and prepare reports.
  • The ability to establish and maintain case notes, client records, and other required documentation.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to prepare and maintain clear, concise, and complete reports and correspondence.
  • The ability to perform assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision.
  • The ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Not be an 'Ineligible Person' as defined by federal health care program regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional forensic counseling experience is highly desired.
  • The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supportive individual counseling to incarcerated minors, focusing on coping with incarceration stress and managing conflict.
  • Address family issues and manage emotional, behavioral, and psychiatric disorders.
  • Facilitate group counseling as program dictates.
  • Assist minors transitioning from Juvenile Hall by facilitating appropriate resource referrals for mental health support.
  • Provide ongoing psychological assessment of minors.
  • Make referrals and provide feedback to psychiatrists for medication management decisions.
  • Support psychiatrist in medication management by facilitating the flow of educational information on medications to minors or parents.
  • Provide follow-up treatment for minors screened at intake for mental/emotional disturbance showing 'caution' or 'warning' results.
  • Respond to crisis situations involving threats of self-harm, harm to others, or out-of-control/self-injurious behavior.
  • Order suicide watch and other special precautions as indicated.
  • Liaise with County Crisis Intervention to facilitate the 5585 hospitalization process.
  • Provide educational information on mental and behavioral health issues to Juvenile Hall staff, nurses, and Probation personnel.
  • Respond to staff requests for assistance in understanding mental health issues.
  • Support Juvenile Hall and Probation supervisors in educating their staff on mental and behavioral health issues.
  • Maintain timely mental health progress notes.
  • Maintain timely log entries and special reports as requested by the Probation Department.
  • File Child Abuse reports per professional requirement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain clinical case notes and documentation of services provided.
  • Provide liaison between Human Services and the criminal justice departments.
  • Provide individual and group treatment in Juvenile Hall.
  • Perform related duties as required.
