About The Position

Forensic Latent Fingerprint Analyst I is the entry-level position in the friction ridge section at the Kentucky State Police Forensic Laboratories. A Forensic Latent Fingerprint Analyst I learns to perform a wide variety of tasks associated with the examination, collection, and preservation of latent (unknown) fingerprint ridge detail and the subsequent comparison with known finger and palm print exemplars in an attempt to establish identity. The presence of Forensic Latent Fingerprint Analysts may be required at crime scenes to assist with evidence gathering and processing, and at autopsies to attempt to identify unknown deceased persons.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in the physical, biological or forensic sciences, engineering or mathematics.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the forensic science of fingerprint comparison, lab development of latent fingerprint evidence or field development of latent fingerprint evidence will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Learns to evaluate latent print evidence for overall quality to establish identity.
  • Learns to perform fingerprint comparisons to establish the identity of latent ridge detail.
  • Prepares written reports documenting the examination performed and conclusions reached.
  • Learns to examine and process physical evidence to develop latent print evidence.
  • Learns to photographically document evidence and latent print detail using common photographic techniques.
