About The Position

Black & McDonald’s Western Utility team is growing! If you are committed and collaborative professional looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you. The Foreman - Civil Utilities is located in Edmonton, AB and reports directly to the Site Supervisor. The primary focus is to supervise and lead a team in the construction and maintenance of Shallow Underground Utilities at various project sites in Edmonton and the Greater Edmonton area.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working in shallow/deep utilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years construction experience with 3 or more years directly supervising crews as a Foreman or as Team Lead.
  • CSTS and Level 2 Ground disturbance certifications.
  • Clean Class 3 Driver’s License and abstract; willing and able to travel to various project sites.
  • Must have the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to always maintain a professional demeanor with fellow employees, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including Microsoft Outlook and mobile device applications
  • Able to move safely throughout active construction sites, including climbing ladders, accessing excavations, and standing or walking for extended periods.
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an equipment operator (excavating and lifting equipment) is an asset.
  • Experience in traffic signals and street light construction/installation beneficial.
  • Leadership for safety Excellence would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Full understanding of project scope, safety requirements, and environmental standards.
  • Leads and mentors field crews, including conducting HSE activities, toolbox/tailboard meetings, and daily coordination.
  • Supervises pipe layers, labourers, and equipment operators, monitoring attendance, productivity, and work quality.
  • Acts as the primary liaison between the crew and the Superintendent, providing regular updates on project status.
  • Resolves on‑site issues or conflicts professionally and supports a positive team environment.
  • Plans and schedules daily construction activities to ensure safe, efficient, and productive field operations.
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings, plans, and project documents related to excavation and installation of concrete bases, junction boxes, conduits, and associated infrastructure.
  • Provides direction in setting up, installing, and commissioning equipment at project sites.
  • Maintains accurate records of work and maintenance activities in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Assists with scheduling, logistics, quality monitoring, and other related duties as required.
