About The Position

Boston.com is seeking a food writer to join its Community team. This digital journalist role requires strong news judgment and editorial instinct to cover food-related topics and trends in the region. The position focuses on fast-paced food news, including restaurant openings/closings, industry shifts, and broader dining trends. The ideal candidate is a collaborative and versatile journalist with a proven ability to drive engagement and discussion online, and an entrepreneurial, data-informed mindset is highly encouraged. The role supports the editorial mission of covering what Boston cares about most.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of reporting and writing experience for a media outlet, preferably covering food/restaurants in the region.
  • Solid editorial judgment and the ability to write quickly and cleanly.
  • A track record of successful, audience-focused work.
  • A progressive understanding of how readers engage with content on social, search, and mobile platforms.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience-focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
  • Candidates should be based in the Boston area or willing to relocate.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, report, and write timely, well-researched stories focused on food news, restaurant openings and closings, dining trends, and other developments in the regional food landscape.
  • Work on assignments with equal enthusiasm.
  • Work collaboratively on a range of assignments and user-generated content, as well as independently develop original, reader-focused story ideas that serve our region.
  • Report and/or aggregate credible sources, meeting standards for verification and attribution.
  • Write copy with a meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, grammar, and team standards for style, framing, imagery, SEO, and social.
  • Conduct regular reader opinion polls, surveys, and quizzes.
  • Analyze response data, identify trends, and quickly write follow-ups.
  • Contribute content for a food newsletter and develop platform-native social content, including posts and videos.
  • Consistently voice new ideas and solutions that strengthen our coverage, deepen audience engagement, and support ongoing experimentation across platforms.

Benefits

  • Hourly rate of $38.41 - $61.53
  • Union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
