About The Position

This position is for a Food Service Worker with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) at Richmond Hospital. The role involves a variety of duties according to Food Safe protocols and quality and safety standards, within a client and family centered model of care. The position promotes a safe and respectful working environment. Duties include portioning and serving meals, assisting with food production, preparing coffee/tea and toast, portioning desserts, assembling sandwiches and salads, preparing and portioning diet items, and measuring and combining food and beverage ingredients. The role also involves checking patient/resident meals/trays for dietary accuracy, stripping wagons/trays, washing dishes and pots, cleaning kitchen equipment and areas, sweeping and mopping floors, removing garbage, delivering wagons/trays, retrieving and storing food items, and replenishing supplies. Clerical duties may also be performed, and the position may involve operating a cash register, receiving payments, and answering customer queries. This is a CASUAL/ON-CALL posting, and the organization is recruiting to maintain a pool of casual staff. It is a unionized environment, and vacancies are posted internally. Working more hours as a casual staff member builds seniority, which can lead to more opportunities when applying for internal vacancies.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 plus one year’s recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Food Safe Certificate Level 1
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to operate related equipment

Responsibilities

  • Portioning and serving meals
  • Assisting with food production by washing and peeling vegetables and fruit
  • Preparing coffee/tea and toast, portioning desserts and assembling sandwiches and salads
  • Preparing and portioning diet items in accordance with nutritional plans
  • Measuring and combining food and beverage ingredients by methods such as grinding, blending, slicing, dicing and/or puree
  • Checking patient/resident meals/trays to ensure dietary accuracy
  • Stripping wagons/trays
  • Washing dishes and pots
  • Cleaning food wagons, kitchen equipment, fridges and storage areas
  • Wiping down tables and counter areas
  • Sweeping and damp mopping floors
  • Removing garbage
  • Delivering wagons/trays to patient/resident units
  • Retrieving and storing food items
  • Replenishing food, beverage and paper supplies
  • Performing related clerical duties
  • Operating a cash register and related equipment, receiving payments and providing change for items purchased
