About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Child Nutrition, this role involves receiving, storing, and serving food at the school site in compliance with State and Federal regulations. The position assists in the preparation and serving of food, cleans kitchen areas, utensils, and equipment according to sanitation standards and State regulations, aids in the general supervision of student conduct, and performs cashiering duties. This is an entry-level position where incumbents perform routine tasks related to setting up food bars and may assist higher-level food service workers in setting up salad bars, food preparation, dispensing, storage, and kitchen cleanliness. The role requires maintaining accurate records and accepting monies for categorically claimed meals.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of sanitation, health and safety regulations related to preparing, storing and serving food.
  • Knowledge of operation of kitchen equipment and computerized cashiering system.
  • Knowledge of record keeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic math skills.
  • Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of kitchen cleaning materials, methods and hygienic practices.
  • Knowledge of proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to prepare, count, assemble, and organize those items needed at assigned school site.
  • Ability to observe established health, safety and sanitation standards.
  • Ability to work efficiently during rush periods.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently, and/or in cooperation with others following established procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain routine records related to food preparation, service and inventory.
  • Ability to make change quickly and accurately when collecting lunch money.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Some experience in quantity food preparation and kitchen maintenance.
  • Possession of a valid Food Handler’s Certificate issued by the County Department of Health.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Verify prepackaged food deliveries to assure adequate quantities; request adjustments and additional items as needed.
  • Set up food bars and restock food items.
  • Serve prepackaged food items.
  • Count items sold at breakfast, lunch and snack bar.
  • Maintain required records related to food served, sales, inventory, and food items left over.
  • Operate a computerized cashiering system, count money, collect monies for meals, and total/reconcile results with computerized reports.
  • Operate a variety of kitchen equipment which might include but is not limited to can opener and microwave.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment, utensils, carts and working areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Observe health and safety regulations established by the district and the State.
  • Work with and around hazardous materials.
  • May be required to participate in emergency cleanup of hazardous materials spills.
  • Maintain food service and related facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Assist in the general supervision of student conduct.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
