About The Position

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor II (CSTS II) is a Food Service Lieutenant for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring efficient and effective food service operations and supervising staff and inmates. Position promotes the CDOC policies, mission and vision. Position exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and cooperation, creating work opportunities and developing inmate skills in preparation for community reentry.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of employment experience participating in food preparation and/or cooking.
  • OR Applicant may meet the five (5) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows: A minimum of three (3) years of employment experience participating in food preparation and/or cooking may be combined with correctional experience for a total of at least five (5) years. Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmate in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior, and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry.
  • OR: A minimum of three (3) years of employment experience participating in food preparation and/or cooking may be combined with hospitality employment experience for a total of at least five (5) years. Hospitality Industry is defined as: Fields within the service industry such as food and beverage, lodging, and travel/tourism.
  • Completion of an accredited, related educational degree (such as culinary arts, hospitality or dietetic/nutrition) may substitute on a year for year basis. Please attach transcripts if you are using any of these substitutions. Transcripts must include the name of institution, your student ID #, a list of the courses completed, the degree earned, and the date awarded.

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid driver’s license. Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver’s license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
  • The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior, in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph.
  • The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; DOC cannot provide H-1B sponsorship at this time.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension , relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics

  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic
  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
  • Willing and able to travel
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year or more of supervisory/work lead duties in the food service industry or correctional kitchen. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management (planning, reviewing and evaluating), resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level, responsibility for scheduling and leave approval, and providing input that could affect pay, status, or tenure.
  • Comprehensive inmate supervision and training through the delegation of duties to food service Sergeants
  • Professional experience as a chef in a commercial, institutional, correctional, or military setting utilizing raw ingredients following large scale recipes.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches; monitors workplace environment and inmates behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, promotes a safe and secure environment.
  • Provides safety and security through the supervision of assigned staff and inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and ethical behavior.
  • Participates in hiring process by interviewing candidates and making recommendations; prepares performance plans, and conducts performance evaluations; resolves informal staff and/or inmate grievances. Assigns tasks, monitors and inspects work progress and ensures assigned staff receives required training; coaches and mentors staff regarding agency supervision and processes and in preparation for career growth and opportunity.
  • Participates in the interview and hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on work crews and training needs are met; ensures inmate workers are trained in all aspects of food service operations. Ensures inmate evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.
