About The Position

The Food Service Helper assists in the preparation and service of quality food to students in a quick and pleasant manner and assists in the collection of funds for meals to deposit. This role supports the mission of Joplin Schools and the value of education. The employee is expected to become familiar with, enforce, and follow all applicable Board policies and regulations, administrative procedures, other directions given by district administrators and supervisors, and state and federal laws. They must properly supervise students at all times, if applicable to essential job functions, and obey all safety rules. The role requires caring for, properly using, and protecting school property, and maintaining courteous and professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, other district employees, and the public. Effective communication with supervisors, department staff, all members of the school district, and the community is essential. The position demands providing excellence in customer service, complying with privacy rights, and safeguarding confidential information. Reacting to change productively and receiving constructive criticism are important. Active participation in professional development and obtaining necessary skills are expected. All official business must be conducted in a professional and timely manner, utilizing district technology resources. Arriving to work and leaving work at the specified time and attending all required meetings are mandatory. Maintaining accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes is required. Solving practical problems utilizing math functions and reading and interpreting documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks are also part of the job duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Previous experience with large scale production, preferred
  • Completion of, or participate in, State, Department of Education, or School Food Service statewide training program or equivalent preferred
  • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Plans the preparation of and prepares all food items
  • Assists with the daily cleaning of all kitchen equipment to ensure cleanliness and sanitary conditions are met
  • Reports inferior quality of food or faulty equipment to the appropriate authority
  • Prepares food according to a planned menu and tested, uniform recipes, and determines if the finished product is of best quality both in flavor and appearance before it is served
  • Records all food requisitions from the storeroom
  • Set up and break down of serving lines (salad bar, hot food, ala carte, etc.)
  • Operates ovens, pressure steamer, steam jacket kettle, tilting skillet, range slicer, chopper, mixer, dish machine, and other food preparation and clean up equipment
  • Collects funds from meal participants
  • Counts funds, makes change, completes related reports
  • Deposits funds to account
  • Carry out all other duties as assigned
