About The Position

Responsible for the preparation of healthy and delicious meals served at Norfolk Veterans' Home. Full Time: Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with every other weekend rotation. Rate of Pay: $21.478/hr ($18.478/hr + $3/hr for every hour worked) Plus applicable shift differential. Work under the general supervision of Food Service Director. Are assigned one or more of the following primary functions: performs skilled work in the preparation and serving of food; oversees food preparation, serving, and maintenance of kitchen sanitation by staff; or serves as a lead worker assigning and monitoring the work of Food Service Assistant positions. Positions at this level follow established procedures and policies. Decisions made at this level are operational relating to the training and monitoring in food handling, serving, and cleaning of dining and food prep areas.

Requirements

  • Coursework, training and/or experience in food preparation, baking and/or kitchen operations in the food service industry or related field.
  • Knowledge of kitchen and dining room safety practices
  • Knowledge of special diets provided by the facility
  • Knowledge of recipes and cooking techniques for the preparation of meats, vegetables, soups, salads and banked goods
  • Knowledge of facility food preparation schedules
  • Knowledge of food sanitation practices
  • Knowledge of the proper handling and processing of a variety of vegetables and fruits
  • Knowledge of kitchen safety practices
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Knowledge of facility standards and procedures for the cleaning of dishes, utensils, equipment and facilities
  • Knowledge of facility specific security and emergency procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively with facility members and staff
  • Ability to safely use sharp, heaving or hot equipment, utensils or supplies
  • Ability to train and supervise in all aspects of kitchen and dining room operations
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to tolerate high temperatures and high humidity
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and carry food items, equipment and supplies
