About The Position

The Food Service Assistant supports food preparation and meal service at Comer Health & Rehab. The role assists the cook with preparing meals, snacks, desserts, salads, and other dishes; serves food and beverages to patients; prepares between-meal nourishments; and provides tray-line service while following diet orders, including NPO orders. The assistant also cleans and sanitizes kitchen work areas, dining areas, dishes, equipment, and garbage containers; monitors and records food-storage and dishwashing temperatures; checks stock and chemical levels; and stores food and cleaning materials appropriately. The position follows standardized recipes, procedural guidelines, and infection-control policies, and communicates with associates, patients, families, and visitors in a warm, professional manner. It may also contribute to committees, workgroups, project management, and other organizational efforts, and perform other duties as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before groups of customers or associates.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to follow written, oral, or diagram-based instructions and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
Ability to meet the described physical demands, with reasonable accommodations where applicable.

Responsibilities

Assist the cook with preparing meals, desserts, snacks, salads, and other dishes.
Carry trays to patients and take meals to patients in the dining area.
Pour and serve beverages, including juice, milk, water, tea, and coffee.
Prepare between-meal nourishments, including sandwiches, and serve nourishments according to procedural guidelines.
Set up the tray line and perform tray-line service while following diet and NPO orders.
Offer menu substitutions and record them according to procedural guidelines.
Clean dining tables after meals and clean work areas at the end of shifts and after meals, including sweeping and mopping.
Remove garbage from kitchen areas and hose out garbage containers.
Scrape and wash dishes, pots, and pans.
Clean kitchen equipment, including carts, tables, counters, ice machine, buckets, blender, mixer, meat slicer, freezer, refrigerator, stove, oven, steamer, garbage disposal, dish machine, coffee and tea maker, and steam table.
Operate the dish machine, garbage disposal, mixer, blender, meat slicer, steamer, and coffee and tea maker.
Record freezer and walk-in refrigerator temperatures in accordance with established procedures.
Check stock as needed and put stock away appropriately.
Store leftovers, opened food, and cleaning materials properly.
Follow infection-control policies and procedures for serving associate meals.
Follow standardized recipes and use serving equipment such as ladles, spoons, and scoops.
Check and record water temperatures for dishwashers and pot-and-pan sinks; check dishwashers with sanitizer strips; check and replace chemical levels as needed.
Communicate with associates, patients, family members, and visitors in a warm, helpful, and professional manner, responding to concerns and answering questions when appropriate.
Contribute to committees, workgroups, project management, and other collaborative efforts of the System.
Perform other duties as necessary to ensure the success of the System.
