About The Position

The Food Service Assistant performs essential duties related to patient meal service, including reading tray tickets, preparing and delivering trays, assisting patients, collecting trays, operating dish machines, and performing cleaning tasks. This role also involves serving cafeteria customers, operating a cash register, portioning food, stocking, recording temperatures, and maintaining sanitation standards. The position requires excellent customer service skills, adherence to safety regulations, and the use of protective barriers. The role is categorized as heavy work, requiring significant standing, walking, and physical exertion.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Good interpersonal / communications skills.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one to other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a positive manner.
  • Ability to add and subtract.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurements and volume.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems.
  • Basic computer knowledge needed.
  • Constantly required to stand and walk.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, and feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; taste and smell.
  • Must exert 25 to 50 pounds frequently and 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Good manual dexterity to operate kitchen equipment.
  • Frequent close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision.
  • Occasional depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Reads patient tray ticket orders and places items on trays.
  • Delivers / serves patient trays, snack and supplements.
  • Assist patients with opening any items.
  • Collects patient trays from room, stacks dirty dishes on cart and returns cart to kitchen.
  • Operates dish machine.
  • Performs daily / weekly cleaning tasks.
  • Washes and sanitizes dishes, pots and pans, and kitchen equipment.
  • May be required to filter hot oil with mesh strainer and/or change oil in fryers.
  • Serves cafeteria customers.
  • Operates cash register.
  • Portions food items as directed.
  • Replenishes stock with proper rotation.
  • Takes and records food temperatures.
  • Takes and records equipment temperatures.
  • Cleans and sanitizes work area, tables, and cabinets.
  • Collects and places garbage and trash in designated containers.
  • Follows scripting when delivering patient trays.
  • Adheres to department safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Use protective barriers (gloves, apron, and proper hair coverings).
