About The Position

This role is for a Food Scientist focusing on poultry, with primary responsibilities in cost optimization, innovation, technology development, and quality improvement. The position involves developing emerging technologies, optimizing costs, and commercializing new and improved products and/or processes under the guidance of a manager. This includes all stages of product and process development, such as writing new product specifications and ensuring regulatory labeling and food safety requirements are met. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of scientific methods and leverage knowledge of ingredients, product formulation, and food processing to develop innovative food products. This role may involve supervising a team of hourly technicians. The position is eligible for relocation assistance but not referral payout. Applicants for P or M level positions will have automatic notification to their current manager if selected for an interview. Applying to this requisition may lead to consideration for either Food Scientist I or Food Scientist II, with the final level determined during the interview process.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Food Science, Meat Science, Food Engineering, or related field.
  • Good computer skills with the ability to fully utilize MS Office products and Tyson systems (or like systems).

  • For Food Scientist I: PhD or MS with no experience; BS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience; No degree with minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • For Food Scientist II: PhD with no experience; MS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience; BS with minimum of 3 years relevant experience; No degree with minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • Alt. Protein science or equivalent experience is also considered for Food Scientist II.

Responsibilities

  • Working with and influencing marketing, insights, sales, culinary, FSQA, operations, and purchasing departments.
  • Coordinating with suppliers of ingredients.
  • Ensuring smooth start-up for new product production processes.
  • Modifying or optimizing existing products.
  • Developing specifications for product production labeling.
  • Compiling cost analysis information.
  • Working on multiple development and optimization projects of moderate complexity independently, from concept through commercialization with guidance from manager.
  • Planning, executing experiments, analyzing data, and reporting results.
  • Executing the development process with activities including benchtop development, pilot plant testing, and scale-up production at a federally inspected research facility and final commercialization at a full-scale production facility.
  • Identifying innovation that can be treated as intellectual property to give Tyson a competitive edge.
  • Analyzing data to build product specifications that are process capable.
  • Presenting technical data or concepts to laypersons.
  • Ensuring costing structure meets the financial expectations of projects.
  • Working on cross-functional teams across the organization for project completion to achieve growth and EBIT strategies.
  • Traveling to plant product facilities.
  • Taking on and completing special projects as needed.
  • Developing culinary samples/prototypes of new products.
  • Modifying and optimizing existing products.
  • Developing product production labels.
  • Leveraging knowledge related to ingredients, product formulation, and food processing.
  • Working with process development to develop process flow charts for engineering.
  • Developing a personal development plan with your manager.
  • Supervising a team of hourly technicians that support a team of scientists.
