About The Position

Under the supervision of the Food Pantry Supervisor, the Food Clerk undertakes the maintenance and packing of food in food pantry at OLS. The Food Clerk will continuously strive to provide the highest quality services on behalf of the Food Pantry Network, while working within the Catholic Charities frame of the Best Practice Principles and in support of the agency’s mission.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma preferred or GED
  • Valid Food Safety Certificate
  • Proficiency in phone network competencies and skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, transactional, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure, completing tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to participate in team-oriented work and promote intra agency community.
  • Ability to work with staff and follow operations while reflecting the Mission of Catholic Charities.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, & climbing stairs.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Should be able to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, & office equipment.
  • Ability to read printed & handwritten materials.
  • Able to travel throughout the five boroughs as needed.
  • Ability to transport necessary supplies to and from locations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Reduce the risk of foodborne contamination by ensuring that proper conditions are maintained with regard to food storage, preparation, and distribution at the Our Lady of Solace Food Pantry.
  • Safeguard that the pantry maintains safe and sanitary conditions in accordance with NYS- DOH guidelines.
  • Accept order shipments upon arrival, check for contaminated or spoiled foods, label boxes with date of arrival and pack shelves in accordance with FIFO (first in-first out) method to reduce the possibility of spoilage or expired food.
  • Ensure that the NYS Department of Health nutrition standards in the preparation of food packages is adhered to ensuring a 9 meal factor and stressing the importance of packing the bag according to family size.
  • Attend the Annual Food Pantry Network meeting. Encourage all pantry volunteers to attend.
  • Adhere to all the administrative and data collection activities required to comply with contractual obligations including maintenance and timely submission of food pantry network statistics.
  • Keep informed of the agency’s Best Practices Principles and have a working knowledge of CCBQ programs and activities.
  • Keep informed of all scheduled activities at OLS Pantry.
  • Set up the space for any tabling, cooking demonstrations and other health and nutrition resources organized by Food Pantry Associate.
  • Greet presenters. Provide sign in sheet and collect signatures of participants attending.
  • Strictly adhere to and enforce all the Agency policies regarding Confidentiality and Corporate Compliance regulations.
  • Attend, at a minimum of once every five years, either the Food Protection Course for Special Food Program given by the DOHMH or the Food Pantry Food Safety Training given by Food Bank.
  • Assist in the facilitation of the operation of the Our Lady of Solace (Coney Island) and Our Lady of Angels (Bay Ridge) Food Pantries.
  • Assist Resource Coordinator for Programming Services in other duties as assigned.
