About The Position

Reporting to the Privacy Director, and indirectly to the Vice President (VP) Legal, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) Officer is responsible for managing the FOIPOP process for NSH; providing expert advice and support to ensure NSH’s compliance with all applicable legislation, as well as internal FOIPOP policy and procedures. The FOIPOP Officer processes information access requests under the Nova Scotia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP Act), including processing consult requests, and supports the development and delivery of education and training to promote awareness and understanding of the FOIPOP Act, related legislation and NSH processes. The role of the FOIPOP Officer is instrumental to fostering a robust privacy culture at NSH that values the need for and importance of balancing public transparency and protection of personal information (PI) and the role of independent oversight. The FOIPOP Officer will work closely with the Privacy Director to review and update best practices for the FOIPOP review process, including requests, disclosure, reporting, and the development of new forms, policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • University Degree in a related field (preferably public administration or law)
  • 3 years’ experience working with the FOIPOP Act (or other Canadian equivalent)
  • Knowledge of privacy and security principles and practices, including legal precedents established or followed in Nova Scotia and other Canadian jurisdictions
  • Strong research, analytical and interpretive skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and experience reviewing, comprehending, and managing large volumes of material and data
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated success establishing credibility with individuals at all levels of an organization, stakeholders, and the public, as well as in environments that require a high degree of tact, diplomacy, integrity, and impartiality
  • Strong facilitation, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to work both independently as well as collaboratively
  • General knowledge of records management, information technologies, and information management and security principles
  • Demonstrated ability to learn about and adapt to different health information systems, programs, and computer applications and software (e.g., Adobe, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with other Nova Scotia privacy legislation such as the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and the Personal Information and International Disclosure Protection Act (PIIDPA)
  • Canadian certification with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) such as CIPP/C or equivalent credential
  • Competencies in other languages (French preferred)
