The Float Pool Registered Nurse provides patient care across PCU, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical, and ER Holding departments within the nurse’s scope of practice. The primary unit is ED Holding. Nurses may also be asked to provide patient care at a nearby facility within the region as needed. The role involves caring for patients with neuro and trauma conditions, surgical and medical needs, respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, orthopedic issues, strokes, and cardiac patients following procedures. Typical patient ratios are 1:4 in PCU and 1:5–6 in Medical-Surgical. Department support includes CNA staff, a charge RN without a patient assignment, hospitalists, respiratory therapists, and specialty physicians on call, with the latter three available 24/7. Orientation includes one day of general hospital orientation and one day of PCU-specific unit orientation. Traveler Telemetry Competency is required. Schedules are built in three-week increments, with advance notice provided. Available shifts are 0700–1930 and 1900–0730. Nurses typically work every other weekend; holidays follow standard expectations. There are no on-call duties. Time-off requests may be approved for up to five days. Self-scheduling is not allowed, and a patterned schedule cannot be guaranteed. Scrubs must be solid-colored and professional in appearance. Free garage parking is available. Hourly rounding and pain levels before and after medication administration must be documented; medication waste requires verification by two nurses, and breaks are mandatory.
