The Float Pool Registered Nurse provides patient care across multiple departments, including PCU, Tele, MedSurg, and ER Holding. The primary area of focus is the ED Holding area, with possible assignments in inpatient PCU and, when needed, a nearby facility. Floating to a nearby facility will be communicated in advance, and assignments must remain within the nurse’s scope of practice. Patient populations and conditions may include neuro and trauma patients; surgical and medical patients; respiratory compromise; sepsis; renal failure; bleeding disorders; CHF; COPD; pneumonia; orthopedic conditions; stroke; cardiac stepdown; and postoperative care, including CABG and TAVRs. Standard ratios are 1:4 in PCU and 1:5–6 in MedSurg. Department support includes CNAs, a charge RN without patient assignments, a hospitalist available 24/7, respiratory therapy available 24/7, and specialty physicians on call 24/7. Orientation consists of one day of general hospital orientation and one 12-hour day of unit-specific orientation on PCU, as well as completion of the Telemetry Competency for travelers. Shifts are 0700–1930 or 1900–0730. Weekend rotations are every other weekend, with some possibility of back-to-back weekends. Time-off requests are limited to five days. Schedules are created in three-week increments, with notification 7–10 days before the schedule begins.
