About The Position

The Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) cares for patients across multiple hospital units in Tacoma, Washington, including Neuro, Trauma, Medical, Cardiac ICU, CCU (cardiac step-down), PCU/ACC, and the ED holding area. The role may also float to other areas of the hospital and, infrequently, to other facilities in the region, with prior notice for regional assignments. Patient populations include ICU, PCU, CCU, and ED holding patients with neuro, trauma, medical, surgical, and cardiovascular conditions. Travelers are not expected to care for fresh post-CABG/TAVR patients, EVDs, post-TPA patients, or patients requiring complex devices such as ECMO, IABP, or Impella, or hypothermia protocols. The facility is a 437-bed Level II Trauma Center with a Level IV NICU. Staffing ratios are 1:2 in ICU and 1:4 in PCU/ACC/CCU; ED holding ratios depend on the level of care. Department support includes a charge nurse, hospitalist, respiratory therapy, and intensivist available 24/7, as well as an on-call cardiologist, phlebotomy services, and a rapid response/code team. The electronic medical record is EPIC. Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps and Pyxis medication dispensing. Orientation includes one day of NEO, one shift of ICU unit orientation, and one shift of orientation on similar units. Travelers must complete a telemetry competency exam as part of compliance before arrival. The schedule is created in three-week increments and shared 7–10 days before the schedule begins. Self-scheduling and a guaranteed patterned schedule are not available. The role requires every-other-weekend rotation, with rare back-to-back weekends. Up to five days off may be approved. Shifts run 0700–1930 or 1900–0730. Any solid professional scrub color is permitted.
