About The Position

The Float Pool Registered Nurse provides patient care across PCU, Telemetry, MedSurg, and ED Holding, with ED Holding expected to be the predominant unit. The nurse may also float to an additional facility approximately 2.5 miles away if needed. Patient populations and conditions include neuro and trauma cases; surgical and medical patients; respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, and bleeding disorders; CHF, COPD, pneumonia, orthopedic conditions, and strokes. The role includes care in CCU (Cardiac Stepdown), where experience is required, and Cardiac Short Stay (Cardiac Obs) patients following procedures such as CABG and TAVR. Patient ratios are 1:4 in PCU and 1:5–6 in MedSurg. Department support includes a CNA, a Charge RN without a patient assignment, 24/7 hospitalist coverage, 24/7 Respiratory Therapy, and cardiac and specialty physicians on call 24/7. The nurse uses EPIC, Alaris IV pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing. Orientation consists of one day of general hospital orientation and one 12-hour day of unit-specific PCU orientation. Traveler Telemetry Competency is required. The schedule is provided in three-week increments, 7–10 days before each cycle; self-scheduling is not available and preferred scheduling patterns are not guaranteed. Shifts are 0700–1930 or 1900–0730, with rotation every other weekend and occasional back-to-back weekends. There are no on-call requirements. Up to five days of requested time off may be approved. Breaks are mandatory. Any solid-color scrubs are acceptable, and professional attire is required. Free parking is available in the parking garage. The role requires filling out whiteboards, documenting hourly rounding, and providing bedside reports. Saline flushes are considered medication and must not be left at the bedside or in scrubs; medications must not be left in unlocked carts. Two-nurse verification is required when wasting medications, including narcotics and benzodiazepines. Pain assessments must be documented before and after pain medication administration—30 minutes after IV medication and one hour after oral medication.
