About The Position

The dental assistant assists the dentist in the practice of four-handed dentistry and in the care of dental patients.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be willing to travel to different locations.
  • Dental Assisting Certification/licensure is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in four-handed TEAM dentistry by transferring instruments and supplies, and keeping the operation site clean and dry.
  • Performs intra-oral procedures including taking impressions, placing and removing periodontal dressings, exposing and developing radiographs, performing toothbrush prophylaxis on pediatric and handicap patients, applying fluorides, selecting and placing matrix bands, fabricating and adapting temporary crowns, selecting and placing gingival retraction cord, and cementing and removing space maintainers.
  • Prepares daily patient schedules in cooperation with the receptionist.
  • Confirms dental appointments with patients.
  • Schedules specialty appointments and notifies patients of details and instructions.
  • Performs daily operatory start-up and shut-down procedures.
  • Guides patients into the treatment area and prepares them for examination and treatment.
  • Charts oral findings.
  • Sterilizes instruments.
  • Maintains equipment and completes required documentation.
  • Orders dental supplies and maintains inventory.
  • Keeps the working area sanitary.
  • Takes medical histories of patients.
  • Prepares and packages dental prosthetic cases for shipping to and from outside dental laboratories.
  • Provides patient dental health education and post-procedure instructions.
  • Completes and submits dental claim forms.
  • Performs any tasks as directed by the dentist to facilitate the mission of Valley Health Systems and meet patient needs.
  • Assists in care coordination, which may include obtaining test and referral results and communicating with various entities.
  • Proactively addresses patient and family needs through population management.
  • Effectively communicates with all patients, with specific attention to vulnerable populations.
  • Provides self-management support through patient coaching and motivational interviewing.
  • Acknowledges the importance of a team approach in patient care.
  • Communicates and coordinates effectively during patient care.
  • Actively participates in the medical home care team.
  • Maintains compliance with the organization's confidentiality policy in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
