About The Position

This Flight Software Engineer III role is part of Blue National Security and supports the Mars Telecom Network, which is intended to provide reliable, long-lived communications for missions at Mars. The role focuses on developing autonomous, multi-system spacecraft avionics and flight software that can operate far from Earth for years. The engineer will contribute across the spacecraft lifecycle, from concept and system definition through integration, verification, on-orbit checkout, and mission operations. The engineer owns embedded avionics software for spacecraft subsystems from requirements through verification, and supports its integration and transition into operations. The work includes software development and testing, requirements traceability, interface definition, integration troubleshooting, and collaboration with avionics, systems engineering, program leadership, and other spacecraft teams.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree or equivalent experience in computer, aerospace, or electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of embedded software development and testing experience, including multithreaded programming and real-time systems, particularly in C/C++.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills with program and technical leadership.
  • Experience implementing and verifying requirements.
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps processes and culture.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience across multiple phases of spacecraft development and operations, such as design, integration, verification, on-orbit checkout, mission operations, and anomaly resolution, or in a similar capacity.
  • Experience with complex, multi-component avionics for spacecraft, aircraft, or similar systems.
  • Experience working on multiple concurrent product baselines (product line engineering).
  • Experience in autonomy, sequencers, state machines, and/or fault management using NPR 7150.2, DO-178, or other safety- or mission-critical software standards.
  • Understanding of spacecraft operations, subsystem functions, interfaces, and common interactions.
  • Experience with embedded Linux or equivalent real-time operating systems.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design, develop, integrate, and test embedded avionics software for spacecraft subsystems in C and C++.
  • Implement and verify software requirements derived from system and subsystem specifications while maintaining traceability.
  • Develop multithreaded, real-time software and the test environments required to verify it.
  • Lead debugging of complex software and hardware/software integration issues, and support anomaly investigations and root-cause analysis.
  • Define software interfaces with avionics, systems engineering, and other spacecraft subsystems.
  • Conduct design and code reviews, and contribute to development practices in an Agile, DevOps environment.
  • Communicate status and technical risks clearly to program and technical leadership.
  • Support integration, test campaigns, and mission-readiness activities as needed.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
