The Flight Nurse Float provides high-quality nursing care to critically ill or injured patients during air transport, using assessment, triage, and treatment standards established by Air Methods Community Base Services (CBS) Medical Directors. The role assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury, prioritizes care, and supports safe transport to the appropriate medical facility. The position supports multiple Clinical Flight Teams at CBS bases in regions where the nurse is currently licensed, with regular travel between bases. Safety is the highest priority throughout the transport continuum. The nurse provides care within their scope of practice from initial patient contact until care is transferred to the receiving facility and maintains thorough documentation. The role includes maintaining clinical competency, required credentials and training, equipment and aircraft readiness, and participation in pre-mission briefings, debriefings, checklists, and safety procedures. The nurse may serve as a resource during neonatal and pediatric transports, precept or orient new employees and students, and participate in outreach, education, meetings, projects, committees, research, and publishing opportunities. The position requires availability to be scheduled for a minimum of two 24-hour shifts per week at any CBS base where currently licensed. Schedules are provided four to eight weeks in advance by the Centralized Scheduling team; self-scheduling is not permitted. The role requires flexibility, including 24-hour shifts, overtime, and an on-call rotation, and travel is approximately 85% of work time. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.
