About The Position

PLA teachers are passionate and devoted leaders who bring creativity and rigor to classrooms to improve scholars’ learning experiences. They build caring environments that nurture the success of the school community. As a Flex Teacher at Phalen Leadership Academies, you work with each teacher of record to help scholars master academic and social skills, assist in setting ambitious achievement goals, and hold scholars accountable for meeting those goals. You are expected to become the teacher of record if a teacher vacancy becomes available.

The position’s key deliverables are that 100% of scholars meet projected growth goals in ELA and Math, 85% report satisfaction on classroom surveys, 90% persist through the academic year, average daily scholar attendance reaches 95%, and each scholar not performing at grade level achieves 1.5 years of growth.

The role is at Higher Institute of Arts and Technology (HIAT), a K–8 charter school in Merrillville, Indiana, serving over 200 students and providing an educational experience in arts and technology. PLA is an education nonprofit that operates turnaround schools and charter school start-ups and provides additional programs in summer learning, reading and math intervention, and workforce development.

Requirements

• Passion for working with students and families in underserved communities.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, with appropriate endorsements if applicable.
• Valid state teacher license or enrollment in a credentialing program.
• Effective pedagogical skills driven by standards and data-driven assessment.
• Experience tracking and using data to drive instruction.

Responsibilities

• Work with each teacher of record to support scholars in mastering academic and social skills.
• Assist in setting ambitious goals for student achievement and hold scholars accountable for accomplishing those goals.
• Become the teacher of record if a teacher vacancy becomes available.
• Support achievement of the stated scholar growth, satisfaction, persistence, and attendance deliverables.
